A Two-Day Workshop for Leaders within Alberta’s Energy System

The Natural Step Canada’s Energy System Transitions workshop is an opportunity to:

  • This workshop is run in conjunction with the

    Explore the energy system that the future requires of us and the risks, challenges and opportunities of transitioning to that future with a diverse mix of individuals representing businesses, NGOs, and governments actively working in this area, including representative of the convening organizations of the Energy Futures Lab;
  • Access to the latest “system-sensing” research and learning on Alberta’s energy system and narratives, gleaned through The Natural Step’s Energy Futures Lab;
  • Experience some of the innovative activities and techniques that will be utilized to support collaboration in the Energy Futures Lab;
  • Gain a solid foundation in concepts and strategy for sustainability-driven innovation; and
  • Participate in an interactive game that explores risks and opportunities by simulating the transition of energy systems.

This workshop is taught by engaging facilitators who lead the Energy Futures Lab. They have worked with businesses and communities—large and small—across Canada and around the world. The workshop draws upon The Natural Step’s 25 years of practical sustainability experience researching, developing, and refining our approach with countless global clients and partners.

Who should attend this workshop?

This workshop is ideal for:

  • People and organizations who are considering the possibility of applying for the Energy Future Lab Fellowship who would experience exposure to what’s going to be involved in the Lab
  • Funders and partners who are looking to understand more about the Energy Futures Lab and how it intends to apply leading edge social innovation concepts and practices.
  • Professionals who have a strong interest in hearing insights from diverse perspectives about complexities and possibilities for the energy system in Alberta.

In general, those who will get the most value from the workshop will have:

  • an appetite for the knowledge, skills and tools to apply a scientifically-based approach to assessing, planning, and taking action towards a sustainable and resilient energy system; and
  • a passion to contribute to the energy conversation so that they can meaningfully contribute to the discussions regarding challenges and opportunities.

Before the workshop, it is recommended that you complete our 1-hour Sustainability 101 eLearning course on your own time as an introduction to the core concepts of The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development. This means all participants will arrive at the workshop with a shared language and understanding of sustainability basics, which will enhance our interaction and discussion to make the most of our time together.

Throughout the day, you will interact closely with your peers, discussing and presenting your ideas, challenges and possibilities back to the group. There will also be ample opportunities to network before and after the workshop, during breaks, and over the lunch hour.

Workshop logistics:

This invitation only workshop will be held on May 19th and 20th, 2015 at Calgary Economic Development, Global Business Centre, 120 – 8 ave SE, Calgary AB. The room will be open to participants at 8:00 and the workshop will begin promptly at 9:00am.

Schedule:           

  • Day 1 (May 19) 9:00am – 5:00pm with a one-hour lunch
  • Day 2 (May 20) 9:00am – 4:00pm with a one-hour lunch
